Last month, I sat with a group of friends to watch the last pay-per-view Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event.
The host the party was a big fan, and he presented a good margin for us, with plenty of food and cold beer. The fight began and everything was going well until my host started acting like he knows something about fighting.
Oh, he knew much about the athletes of the UFC, but not much about an actual street fight.
For him, the be-all-the end of everything is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Raved about how the Gracie family had invented the sport and how his fighting style dominated the other thing out there.
I tried to keep quite, but you can only hear someone pick the wrong information for so long.
I explained that Gracie did not invent anything and everything that showed they learned from Judo. Sure, they were hard and were a great group of athletes (and some of the best guys you never know), but did nothing new.
To fully understand BJJ you must first must look at the evolution of jujutsu into the pre-World War II Syllabus Judo developed by Jigoro Kano in the 19th century.
Although the supporters of BJJ say Kano considered ground fighting unimportant, they could not be more wrong. Kano, simply stressed standing techniques, because it took ten times longer to learn then fieldwork.
In fact, in Japan they say "A year to learn ground, ten years to learn standing."
One of Kano's students Mitsuyo Maeda, a judo instructor veteran who had taught in several countries, seemed the perfect choice to go to Brazil after World War
Maeda showed Judo I could do when he defeated many wrestlers and boxers with pins, armbars, and throws. He even allowed a challenge to use a knife and quickly yet defeated man. These exhibitions made Maeda one of the first mixed martial artists. It became very popular in Brazil and impressed Gastao Gracie, a wealthy businessman.
In exchange for financial aid, Maeda agreed to train their children. Maeda had only a few months with the child for what started with the basics and underlined bases instead of the more complex standing techniques.
Hélio Gracie loved Judo and continued his training and teaching. Although not sure why began calling it Jiu Jitsu, all takedowns, throw, and the presentation were things he learned from Maeda.
Helio only defeat (most games were draws) was to Japanese Judoka Masahiko Kimura, who broke Helio's arm and won the game. To the credit of helium, not the faucet, but completely dominated Kimura the game shooting less skilled opponent into the ground at will.
The family continued to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and even brought "old school" judo leg lock and lower body submission. When brought to the United States through the UFC, its popularity grew enormously.
While the boys BJJ advantage of wrestlers, boxers and other martial artists who never had been strangled before, the judo community continued to focus on the Olympics.
When retired judo Olympic champion Yoshida entered the "Pride Fighting Championships (UFC Japan), which comfortably exceeded any BJJ practitioner who entered the ring. – Including the UFC champion Royce Gracie.
I can not imagine the damage they have done in his first council mediocre War to the current mix of arts fighters.
Listen, I have no problem admitting that Jiu-Jitsu works well in a ring, cage or octagon. While an Olympic caliber judoka would destroy competition, BJJ still seems to be a useful skill for today's MMA fighter.
But do not dare to think that BJJ is the answer in the street.
When you hit the deck, there is no way too many variables to consider. Including being stepped on, bitten, gouged, or crashed into the concrete.
While judo is a sport still technically at least, their formation is a symbol of real combat. Throw a man on the land by force, gain dominant position, then kill it if needed … otherwise at his feet and ready for his next opponent.
