The second prequel to the saga of Hannibal (after the Manhunter remake Red Dragon) is what brings us to how he created the notorious cannibalistic serial murderer Hannibal Lector. This time around Gaspard Ulliel takes over Anthony Hopkins's character that made the mass murderer the genius of a cultural icon of cinema in three films.
The new movie is written by Thomas Harris, who wrote all the novels and is making his debut screenplay here. Peter Webber, whose last film was sublime girl with pearl earring is to take a deviation from the norm for this movie murder and cannibalism and sexual deviance. This film follows the steps Hannibal instead of Silence of the Lambs or Red Dragon in a film that is more a character of the police procedural. This film is more concerned with the psychological Reader created until when his parents and sister were murdered during World War II when it enacts revenge for those responsible.
This film works at the same level as Spider David Cronenberg film, but also highlighted the gruesome psychology was Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal gore. Ulliel is quite capable of Hannibal role, but Gong Li as Lady Murasaki Shikibu, who steals the film as the aunt of the young Hannibal, who teaches the way of the world, other things.
Although not as good as Silence of the Lambs or Hannibal, Hannibal Rising is an interesting attempt to try to milk a character for all its worth, but nothing new.
