Dome

Cupola furnaces are among the most popular with backyard foundries. Many wheel build your own cupola which proves to be profitable and highly efficient if done correctly. Since cupola furnaces can achieve high melting temperatures are used mainly for iron and bronze, though aluminum can also be melted when attention is paid to keep the temperature down. The basic idea of a Reverbeatory Oven is to use the heat reflected a surface, usually brick, to heat the metal which is aluminum in most cases. Thus, the metal does not come into contact with the fuel or the flame. This process is also used in the puddling furnaces. The name of hearth and pools are used interchangeably. By placing the metal in a shallow depression and then the direction of an intense flame in which depression and wall heat rebounds to melt the metal. Many wheels adjust the length of the flame since a longer path means that the heat more intense.

There is many designs for the reverberatory furnace, all of which include exhaust ports and the back of the oven must be capable of withstanding the intense heat and be able to bounce back in the chamber.

Bronze, aluminum, tin, and many other minerals can be melted in a reverberatory furnace all depends on the actual construction of the oven and the heat of the flame. This type of oven has been around at least since the Middle Ages and was used primarily for work in bronze.

Arc

Electric arc furnaces are typically used in industrial castings. Most hobby wheels do not use these furnaces due to cost, issues space, and a general nuisance. There are two forms of electric arc furnaces, the direct and indirect.

The direct arc has three electrodes that are used to heat the metal by the arc. This creates a tremendous amount of heat and so water jackets and other cooling devices will be necessary for the operation.

The indirect arc just uses one electrode and works very similar to direct arc furnaces.

The electric induction furnaces are becoming increasingly popular with large industrial size foundries that enjoy the clean burning and efficiency of a furnace electric. The style of the rotary kilns are acclaimed for their ease of use is complete or at least partially automatic. These ovens are be more difficult to build, although there are resources and companies online that sell rotary furnace.
